Russian Tycoons Showing Special Interest in Luxury Yachts this Year

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

The Washington Post reported a growing trend in wealthy Russians and their interest in luxury yachts, with a sharp increase in million-dollar boats purchased in the past year. Chris Weafer, expert on Russia’s business elite and chief strategist for investment bank Uralsib, says yachts are this year’s must-have toy for Russia’s business elite.

Russian businessman Roman Abrahamovich, who is the 3rd richest man in Russia and the 50th richest man in the world according to the 2010 Forbes list with an estimated fortune of $11.2 billion, already exhibits an impressive fleet of luxury motor yachts.

His newest and most impressive yacht, the Eclipse, was built in Germany by Blohm + Voss and completed in September 2009. At 557 feet, she is the world’s largest private yacht with at least two swimming pools, two helipads, several on-board tenders and a submarine. Eclipse is believed to have cost Abramovich at least £300million. Abramovich’s new toy joined the rest of his fleet earlier this year. None of his ships  – the Pelorus (377ft), the Ecstasea ( 282ft) and the Sussurro (161ft) – are insubstantial but the Eclipse trumps them all.

Another Russian businessman, Ruben Khokhryakov, has tried to capitalize on the yachting craze by building a unique three-masted sailing ship. The special design of the boat enables it to float much higher than most other yachts of its class, generating a top speed of up to 20 knots and prompting Khokhryakov to name the ship “Running on Waves.” He plans to take his mega-yacht out on the Red Sea later this year and to the Mediterranean next year. Sailing does not come cheap, however, with the price for a week-long trip ranging from 3,500 to 35,000 Euros ($46,960) per person.

Atlantic Yacht and Ship is a yacht brokerage in Fort Lauderdale, Florida that provides motor yachts for sale as well as yacht charters. We will work with your budget for a week charter to your destination of choice, anywhere from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean.

The World’s Largest Superyacht Currently Under Construction

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

The motor yacht Eclipse is currently under construction and is set to become the world’s largest yacht when she is completed and delivered later this year. The details of the superyacht are kept extremely private, but rumors are flying that the owner of the world’s largest yacht is Russian billionaire Roman Abrahamovich.

The Eclipse first hit the water in June 2009 and is currently being built at the Blohm + Voss Hamburg shipyard in Germany with interiors by the world-renowned London company Terence Disdale Design.

The length of the world’s largest superyacht is estimated to be between 531 to 558 feet! All details are up to speculation, but the Eclipse is rumored to be able to accommodate 62 guests in 24 luxury cabins, and can hold up to 92 crew members.  The superyacht supposedly includes a private leisure submarine and an adjustable depth swimming pool that can be converted into a dance floor. Others luxurious features include a Jacuzzi, an exterior fireplace and two helicopter landing pads that can accommodate up to three helicopters.

According to a Norwegian newspaper, the Eclipse is set to undergo sea trials in Kristiansand, Norway for a week in mid-May.  When the motor yacht is completed later in 2010, she will officially be named Number 1 in the Superyachts World’s Largest Yachts list, beating out the current record holder Dubai, launched in 2006.

If you’re interested in purchasing a motor yacht, Atlantic Yacht and Ship is a yacht brokerage in Fort Lauderdale, Florida that sells new and old motor yachts of all sizes- from superyachts to smaller, more modest boats. Atlantic also offers yacht charters to the Caribbean, Bahamas, Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and Central America and will work with your budget and needs to give you an unforgettable travel experience.

Still Under Construction, the World’s Largest Motor Yacht Features Mystery Owner

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

For those who love all that is yachts, it was an exquisite treat to see a luxury motor yacht of massive proportions propelling its way from Blohm & Voss Shipyards recently on what is assumed to be a test run.  The event has become quite newsworthy due to the fact that the buyer of this colossal luxury yacht remains a mystery.  Because the custom motor yacht will snag the title of the largest luxury yacht on the globe, many are very intrigued to find out who the owner will be.

It has been rumored that the buyer may be Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, though the secrecy shrouding the matter is all a regular part of the customer service standards provided by Blohm & Voss to its super-rich clientele.  Abramovich is ranked Russia’s second-richest man by Forbes magazine, owning a large stake in Evraz Group steelmaker and Chelsea football club.

Blohm & Voss confirmed only that the vessel was down the slip and into the fitting stage, saying nothing more about the much anticipated project with hull number 978.  On the website of Blohm & Voss, it is stated only that the length of the large yacht exceeds 160 meters.  The hull and superstructure of the yacht were constructed in a hangar-like shielded dock by employees sworn to secrecy.  It is presumed to have been a test run because the structure was painted a light grey, likely an undercoat, and there was some scaffolding attached to the yacht.  Many photographs and speculations accompanied the mega yacht on its outing.
