The Rise of the ‘Gigayacht’

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

As if the news of 25-year-old Brian McCarthy, son of the millionaire president of Marriott International, winning $107 million in the Mega Millions jackpot wasn’t enough to incite an eye roll or two, CNN International reports that the ‘gigayacht’ is on the rise for the super rich.

“For the billionaire who has everything, sometimes a superyacht just isn’t enough,” reports CNN.  “Gigayachts” are the ultimate status symbol, communicating power, eminence and a seemingly limitless supply of cash. Once the rich become the super rich, it’s all about being the biggest and the best – “There’s definitely a ‘mine is bigger than yours’ syndrome in this industry and there is a desire to have the best. That’s the great thing about these yachts,” said Jonathan Beckett, CEO of Burgess Yachts, one of the world’s leading yacht brokers. Buyers of gigayachts are accustomed to surrounding themselves with the most opulent and exceptional possessions, and as owners seek bigger and better yachts, the term ‘gigayacht’ is becoming more and more prevalent. Although there is no standard definition for what qualifies a boat as a “gigayacht,” SuperYacht World editor Paul Ashton says, “A gigayacht I would say is anything that is over 220 feet (67 meters) where the majority of the yacht is customized and bespoke.”

So who currently owns the world’s most expensive yacht? CNN names Roman Abramovich’s “Eclipse,” believed to be between $540 million and $1.1 billion. However, a couple of weeks ago, we reported on “History Supreme,” the $4.8 billion precious-metal-encrusted superyacht (by Ashton’s standards) designed by Stuart Hughes. We’re assuming History Supreme wasn’t named because the buyer hasn’t been officially identified.

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

Today’s obsessions du jour include health, fitness and being green. With a mission to contribute to “a sustainable and ecological revolution,” Green Yachts is doing their part to lessen the impact of marine vessels by designing luxury, eco-friendly boats and yachts. The latest addition to their collection is titled Zero 33, a, you guessed it, 33-foot pleasure yacht designed in Italy.

Zero 33 was designed and built to be as environmentally-friendly as possible, using a hybrid propulsion system and constructed with 100 percent eco-friendly materials. Zero 33 doesn’t sacrifice style for its green status – with clean lines and a streamlined design, this yacht can rival any other yacht of similar size. All interiors were made with natural fabrics, paints are solvent-free, wood hand-picked and authorized from plantations and all electrical systems are designed to minimize power consumption. Panoramic windows invite natural sunlight to flood the expansive main salon, a welcome treat for guests. Zero 33 also has a low purchase cost, allowing first-time buyers to invest in this one-of-a-kind green yacht.

Eco-friendly yachts and boats could be the next big trend in the marine industry, offering a unique combination of luxury and environmental friendliness. South Florida Marine Industry Spins for a Cause

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Last Friday, the marine industry came together in downtown Fort Lauderdale and geared up for a great cause. The third annual Spin-A-Thon to benefit Kids in Distress (KID), a South Florida agency that helps abused and neglected children, was a rousing success. The Spin-A-Thon was hosted by the Marine Industry Cares Foundation, which was created by a group of industry leaders committed to bringing the marine and local communities together to raise money and awareness for local charities.

For six hours, more than 400 people took a turn cycling on stationary bikes for KID. The event raised over $100,000 and counting for the charity. It was a fun way for the maritime industry to come ashore and make a difference in the lives of local children and families.

The day began when City of Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler and former Dolphins player Keith Sims kicked off the event by cycling first at 1pm. Once commenced, each participating marine business had a team bike and a group of enthusiastic cyclists that kept the wheels turning until the spinning event’s end at 7pm. But, the festivities lasted well into the night at a “Thank-you” party for participants and guests.

This year’s Spin-a-thon was sanctioned by Winterfest and was a Fort Lauderdale centennial event. The organizers hope to continue raising support for local charities through exciting, fun events like the Spin-a-thon, which promotes a sense of camaraderie and unity among the marine industry. The ultimate goal is for other shipping industries in cities around the world to adopt the model and implement similar events in their own area.

Atlantic Yacht and Ship is a yacht broker in Fort Lauderdale and has served the South Florida community for over 50 years. Events like the Spin-A-Thon are a great way to showcase the maritime industry. Panama Marina Offers Scenic Hurricane Contingency Plan

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Panama is recognized as an international hub for the boating community, with many cruisers drawn to the mild climate, unique flora and proximity to the United States and the Caribbean.  But it’s not the mangrove coves, beautiful beaches or natural ecology that most attracts visitors during the hot summer months, but rather its’ fortunate location. Positioned just outside of the hurricane belt, Panama provides yachts from all over the world a shelter from the storm.

Red Frog Marina, nestled in the Caribbean islands of Bocas Del Toro, offers dockage for yachts from June through November, during the height of hurricane season.  The marina is known for calm waters that reach depths of over 25 feet.  With less than an 18-inch tidal change, the waters are naturally protected on the southern side of Isla Bastimentos, giving yacht owners peace of mind away from the threat of turbulent weather.

The Red Frog Marina has a sophisticated floating dock system able to accommodate any vessel.  Boats up to 193 feet may dock along the 250-meter walkway, taking in picturesque views of Panama’s mangroves and beaches.  The marina ensures their visitors are comfortable when riding out hurricane season.  Not only do guests have access to gorgeous beaches, resort amenities and marine services, but the marina also offers practical assistance like complimentary water-taxi services, a workshop for equipment repair and dockside power and water.

Also available are multiple hiking trails, snorkeling spots and scuba sites to entertain land-bound cruisers.  The ubiquitous mangroves are not only scenic, but also provide significant shelter from hurricane-force winds and strong storms, resulting in the smooth, glassy water that draws Red Frog Marina’s international guests.

Atlantic Yacht and Ship is your premier yacht broker in Fort Lauderdale.  We have served the South Florida community for over 50 years.  If you are in the market for used boats or yachts for sale, check out our listings today!
