Mysterious Yacht Washes Up on Florida Gulf Coast

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Last Wednesday, an unmanned yacht called “Makin Waves” mysteriously washed up on the shores of Redding Beach, west of St. Petersburg on the Florida Gulf Coast. The 48-foot yacht had no one onboard and its engines running on autopilot when it was spotted by local resident Gene Borg.

“I see boats all the time — it’s one of the joys of living here — but this one was coming straight in at the beach,” Borg said. “I hollered at my wife to call 911 and I put on my bathing suit out of concern someone was having a medical emergency.” Borg inspected the boat and found no one inside.

The mystery yacht was reported stolen from a marina in Cancun, Mexico. The owner, Arturo Millet Reyes, who owns a professional soccer team in the Mexican state of Yucatan, said his yacht was taken from a private marina and he reported the theft to local police. The Mexican Coast Guard had been on the lookout for the stolen yacht.

Investigators saw no signs of violence or evidence that the yacht was used for criminal activity. “Makin Waves”, a 48-foot Sea Ray Sundancer, sells for $1 million new. The owner is in touch with sheriff’s deputies to retrieve his boat and the case has been closed in Pinellas County, Florida.

14-Year-Old Sets Out to Sail Around the World Solo

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

At 14 years old, Laura Dekker will set sail from the Netherlands on Wednesday in her quest to become the youngest person to circumnavigate the world solo. If she succeeds, she will beat the record held by Australian Jessica Watson, who was 16 years old when she completed her voyage around the world.

Laura will first sail from the Dutch harbor Den Osse to Portugal with her father, then embark on her solo voyage from there on her yacht, Guppy. Earlier this year, American teen Abby Sunderland, who attempted to break the world record as youngest to sail around the world, and had to be rescued in the Indian Ocean after a wave snapped the mast of her yacht.

Despite concerns from Dutch child protection agencies about allowing young sailors out at sea for extended periods of time, a family court ruled last week that Laura’s preparations seemed adequate and she is cleared to begin her risky solo voyage around the world. “It’s great that I can now officially say it will happen on Wednesday,” says Laura in her blog.

Russian Tycoons Showing Special Interest in Luxury Yachts this Year

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

The Washington Post reported a growing trend in wealthy Russians and their interest in luxury yachts, with a sharp increase in million-dollar boats purchased in the past year. Chris Weafer, expert on Russia’s business elite and chief strategist for investment bank Uralsib, says yachts are this year’s must-have toy for Russia’s business elite.

Russian businessman Roman Abrahamovich, who is the 3rd richest man in Russia and the 50th richest man in the world according to the 2010 Forbes list with an estimated fortune of $11.2 billion, already exhibits an impressive fleet of luxury motor yachts.

His newest and most impressive yacht, the Eclipse, was built in Germany by Blohm + Voss and completed in September 2009. At 557 feet, she is the world’s largest private yacht with at least two swimming pools, two helipads, several on-board tenders and a submarine. Eclipse is believed to have cost Abramovich at least £300million. Abramovich’s new toy joined the rest of his fleet earlier this year. None of his ships  – the Pelorus (377ft), the Ecstasea ( 282ft) and the Sussurro (161ft) – are insubstantial but the Eclipse trumps them all.

Another Russian businessman, Ruben Khokhryakov, has tried to capitalize on the yachting craze by building a unique three-masted sailing ship. The special design of the boat enables it to float much higher than most other yachts of its class, generating a top speed of up to 20 knots and prompting Khokhryakov to name the ship “Running on Waves.” He plans to take his mega-yacht out on the Red Sea later this year and to the Mediterranean next year. Sailing does not come cheap, however, with the price for a week-long trip ranging from 3,500 to 35,000 Euros ($46,960) per person.

Have Fun and Be Safe in the Water this Memorial Day

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Memorial Day Weekend is widely considered to be the start of the summer boating season. It’s often the time when boaters bring their vessels out of the winter dry dock into the water for the first time all year. This time of year, Florida has nearly one million recreational and commercial vessel registrations.

Whether you’re sailing to the Keys, the Bahamas, or exploring the Intracoastal waterways this Memorial Day weekend, have fun and be safe. With all the boats in the water, it is important to be weary of collisions and wrecks.

This week is also National Safe Boating Week, reminding boaters everywhere to make educated decisions and harbor good safety equipment. According to the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, there were 620 boating accidents in Florida last year and 657 accidents in 2008. Most of the boaters in wrecks last year (70%) had no formal boating education. Numbers showed that they were relatively experienced boaters with an average age of 36. Alcohol was not so much a factor as inattention.

Water safety experts remind you to have your vessel checked out thoroughly before leaving port. Captains be sure to check safety equipment and electronics on the ship.
