The Marine Industry Turns a New, Green Leaf

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

More and more industries are going green. From Whole Foods to Apple, one might typically think of companies attempting to become more eco-friendly as generally young and modern. But now, an old industry is finding new ways to lessen its impact on the environment.

New green technology is emerging in the marine industry. The boating and yachting community would not exist if it weren’t for the natural wonders of our environment, and developing more environmentally-conscious technology to preserve and protect it is essential. Fuel efficiency has been a top priority, and years of research and design have finally led to a promising new product on the market called GO2. Pronounced “go-two,” it is a diesel fuel optimizer additive, developed by Cerion Energy Inc. Nano-technology made this innovative additive possible; with an active ingredient of cerium dioxide that is 2.5 nanometers, it adheres to a petroleum-based solution for introduction into the fuel supply of the vessel. It is a highly reactive solution that renews the oxygen particles during the combustion cycle about 100 million times. This redistributes the oxygen, allowing the fuel to be absorbed more thoroughly.

The benefits of using G02 include lowering overall fuel costs and cutting down on harmful emissions such as CO and NO2. The solution also increases lubricity, which limits engine wear. Cerion Energy’s data reports that fuel efficiency will increase by 7 to 13 percent, while also decreasing soot by 30 percent. There is plenty of financial support for the research and development of new ways to cut costs and save energy in the marine industry.

Miami Boat Show Results & a New Option for Customs at the U.S. Virgin Islands

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Atlantic Yacht and Ship is pleased to announce that the 2011 Yacht and Brokerage show in Miami Beach was a success. The weekend brought beautiful weather and a good turnout of attendees. Kim Cuadrado, Sales Support for Atlantic, said “It went well. We had a steady amount of traffic and several of our guys have deals pending that they wrote up at the show.” Overall, this year’s event was a positive sign that the economy is starting to pick up and that qualified yacht buyers are feeling more confident about investing.

In other recent news, last week there was an exciting announcement for all those island hoppers out there about online reporting to USVI port, U.S. Virgin Islands. The option for United States citizens and legal residents to report their arrival to the port by phone has been in effect since 2006, and now it is going a step further with online reporting. Those enrolled in the LBO, Local Boaters Option program, can now use the Small Vessel Reporting System online feature to check in their arrival to the U.S. Virgin Islands port. This new application will cut down on waiting time to clear customs, and surely provide more convenience for a leisurely visit to the islands.

The LBO is a great new program, and enrollment is voluntary and free. One must complete a background check and make an appointment for an in-person interview with the U.S. Customs and Boarder Protection office. Those who are already in the LBO must apply online for a password to access the float plan function of the Small Vessel Reporting System. For more information, click here.

Scotland Gets New Sustainable Floating Marina

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

A new project from Europe is underway after a $30 million contract was signed by U.K.-based firm Floating Concepts Ltd., specializing in sustainable developments. This is very exciting news for the global yachting community and water lovers alike. This project is proposed to start construction in 2012 and to be completed in three phases by 2015. The firm aims to build an eco-friendly luxury village, a pioneering concept considering luxury and sustainability aren’t often mutually associated. The location chosen is the former Canting basin at Pacific Quay, a convenient mile from Glasgow city center. The vision for the U-shaped floating community includes homes, shops, offices, restaurants, a marina and even a roof-top concert arena. Chief executive David Beard says, “The iconic nature of a floating village will turn Canting Basin into a major attraction quite unlike any other in the world, as well as being a dynamic center for local people and businesses.”

The true innovation of this project comes from the firm’s forward thinking about sustainable living, and their goal to maximize the use of water. While the idea is heavily influenced by the existing houseboat communities in Holland and Scandinavia, Floating Concepts pushed it one step further by envisioning roadways to office buildings and studio flats with private moorings. This progressive sustainable design will also house a car-free base with recycling collected by a barge. The marina will offer about 80 berths for sale or lease, incorporating the ‘DualDocker’ berthing system making mooring lines obsolete. There are also plans for a public yacht club and other luxury leisure activity functions. This new project is anticipated to be an example of the new frontier in smart sustainable waterfront living, and is expected to make Glasgow Pacific Quay a desirable tourism destination.
