Tampa Bay Boat Show Coming This Weekend

The Tampa Bay Boat Show, a grand event showcasing the latest in boating supplies and accessories from boat dealers and manufacturers, is coming to the Florida State Fairgrounds from Friday, June 17th through Sunday, June 19th. The three-day event is a great way to compare all different makes and models in one location. The exhibition will include millions of dollars of boating inventory, including new boats of all sizes, trailers, docking and safety equipment as well as other outdoor-related accessories. The event is open to the public from 10am to 6pm Friday and Saturday, and 10am to 5pm on Sunday. Best of all, admission to the Tampa Bay Boat Show is free!

America’s Cup World Series Announced

The 2011 season of the America’s Cup World Series sailing regattas have been announced. The series consists of three regattas, with the first event kicking off in Cascais, Portugal from August 6^th through the 14^th. The second event in the America’s Cup series will take place in Plymouth, England from September 10^th to the 18^th. Finally, the America’s Cup World Series will end in San Diego in late fall or early winter.

The America’s Cup World Series will lead up to the America’s Cup Finals regatta in September 2013 to be held in San Francisco. A total of 14 teams from 12 countries are expected to compete at the next race in Cascais, Portugal – with Artemis Racing of the Royal Swedish Yacht Club named as the official Challenger of Record. The America’s Cup World Series will feature exciting fleet races as well as races between pairs of yachts.

Fort Lauderdale’s Bahia Mar Renovation Gets First Approval

The proposed $250 million renovation of Bahia Mar in Fort Lauderdale received the first of two approvals in mid-May by city commissioners. Plans for the renovation include an updated Bahia Mar hotel, a new five-star Waldorf Astoria, a waterfront park and a permanent home for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. LXR Resorts, owned by the Blackstone Group, has been negotiating with the city for five years to renovate Bahia Mar. The project will not be funded by tax-payer dollars, as developers would pay for a beach community center, a police command center and a trolley stop as well as facilities that would improve the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

The original proposal, which was twice the size, was turned down last year by community members who felt the development would overwhelm the beach and destroy views of area homeowners. However, new toned-down proposal seems to be largely supported by beach activists and community members. “This is the largest piece of waterfront property owned by the city and any plans for it should take advantage of its size and prominence to make this a great waterfront city,” said Idlewyld neighborhood activist Anne Hilmer.

After the rezoning is approved, developers will have to discuss the length of the lease, as well as negotiate a deal with the boat show to serve as its permanent home. The deals are expected to be completed by late summer, as developers hope to begin construction in two years and finish the renovation by 2016.

South Florida Marine Industry Spins for a Cause

Last Friday, the marine industry came together in downtown Fort Lauderdale and geared up for a great cause. The third annual Spin-A-Thon to benefit Kids in Distress (KID), a South Florida agency that helps abused and neglected children, was a rousing success. The Spin-A-Thon was hosted by the Marine Industry Cares Foundation, which was created by a group of industry leaders committed to bringing the marine and local communities together to raise money and awareness for local charities.

For six hours, more than 400 people took a turn cycling on stationary bikes for KID. The event raised over $100,000 and counting for the charity. It was a fun way for the maritime industry to come ashore and make a difference in the lives of local children and families.

The day began when City of Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler and former Dolphins player Keith Sims kicked off the event by cycling first at 1pm. Once commenced, each participating marine business had a team bike and a group of enthusiastic cyclists that kept the wheels turning until the spinning event’s end at 7pm. But, the festivities lasted well into the night at a “Thank-you” party for participants and guests.

This year’s Spin-a-thon was sanctioned by Winterfest and was a Fort Lauderdale centennial event. The organizers hope to continue raising support for local charities through exciting, fun events like the Spin-a-thon, which promotes a sense of camaraderie and unity among the marine industry. The ultimate goal is for other shipping industries in cities around the world to adopt the model and implement similar events in their own area.
