Fort Lauderdale Int’l Boat Show Coming Up Oct. 28!

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

The annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is the largest boat show in the world, and expects to be even stronger this year with a list of new features and firsts. From Thursday, October 28 to Monday, November 1, 2010, the 51st Annual Boat Show will hold more than $3 billion worth of yachts, superyachts, electronics, engines and boating accessories from all the major manufacturers and boat builders worldwide.

Why this year’s show will be even bigger and better than ever:

  • Florida’s sales tax cap on boats was passed on July 1, 2010. The tax on boats is 6 percent and capped at no more than $18,000. This tax incentive is expected to tremendously boost yacht sales at the show this year.
  • The largest boat built in the U.S. since the 1930’s, the 281-foot Cakewalk, will make its international debut in Fort Lauderdale.
  • The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show goes green! Show Management, the company that manages the boat show, has pledged to offset 100 percent of greenhouse gas emissions from the boat show. Also, the Broward County Convention Center is on track to becoming LEED-certified.

The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show sprawls across over 3 million square feet of space in 5 locations:

1.       Bahia Mar Beach Resort and Yachting Center

2.       The Hall of Fame Marina

3.       Las Olas Municipal Marina

4.       Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina

5.       Broward County Convention Center

With an extensive list of motor yachts for sale, Atlantic is sure to make a splash at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show this year.

Broward County Dredging Projects Slated for 2011

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

For several years, the Florida Inland Navigation District has been working to obtain permits for three dredging projects along the waterways of Broward County, Florida. The opened waterways will allow for passage of larger yachts, giving South Florida’s marine industry a boost.

The Inland Navigation District is close to attaining the paperwork for the first project slated for 2011. The project will create a 17-foot deep path along the Dania Cut-Off Canal, on a one-mile stretch from Port Everglades to US1. The $5 millions project is expected to take 6 months to complete. Once completed, the waterway will allow passage of boats up to 200 feet.

The second project will involve a 17-foot dredging of the Intracoastal Waterway, from 17th Street Causeway in Fort Lauderdale to the Las Olas Bridge. The project, slated for late 2011, covers two miles and will cost around $10 million.

Finally, the third dredging project will take place on the New River spanning from west of I-95 heading north to I-595. The three dredging projects will make Broward’s waterways more mega yacht-friendly, serving as a welcome economic boost to South Florida and greatly benefitting marinas in Fort Lauderdale.

Mysterious Yacht Washes Up on Florida Gulf Coast

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Last Wednesday, an unmanned yacht called “Makin Waves” mysteriously washed up on the shores of Redding Beach, west of St. Petersburg on the Florida Gulf Coast. The 48-foot yacht had no one onboard and its engines running on autopilot when it was spotted by local resident Gene Borg.

“I see boats all the time — it’s one of the joys of living here — but this one was coming straight in at the beach,” Borg said. “I hollered at my wife to call 911 and I put on my bathing suit out of concern someone was having a medical emergency.” Borg inspected the boat and found no one inside.

The mystery yacht was reported stolen from a marina in Cancun, Mexico. The owner, Arturo Millet Reyes, who owns a professional soccer team in the Mexican state of Yucatan, said his yacht was taken from a private marina and he reported the theft to local police. The Mexican Coast Guard had been on the lookout for the stolen yacht.

Investigators saw no signs of violence or evidence that the yacht was used for criminal activity. “Makin Waves”, a 48-foot Sea Ray Sundancer, sells for $1 million new. The owner is in touch with sheriff’s deputies to retrieve his boat and the case has been closed in Pinellas County, Florida.
