Plans to Improve Canals in Fort Lauderdale, Florida Will Draw Mega Yachts

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

As the Yachting Capital of the World, Fort Lauderdale draws in millions of dollars of revenue each year from the yachting industry. The marine industry in Fort Lauderdale creates jobs, brings a world-renowned annual boat show each fall, increases tourism dollars and not to mention boosts demand for waterfront real estate – keeping up property value in the region.

That’s why it’s no surprise that Fort Lauderdale city officials are looking into the dredging of the New River, the main line of access to yachting facilities in the city. The improvements are designed to make Fort Lauderdale competitive with international ports in the Caribbean, Mediterranean and Dubai.

The city has commissioned the Florida Inland Navigation District, a state agency that keeps the Intracoastal Waterway navigable, to determine if it would be possible to deepen a 6-mile stretch of river. The waterway averages 10 feet deep would be dredged to 14 feet, making it possible for newer boats with jet drives and larger yachts and sailboats up to 200 feet long to come through.

The project is still being studied to examine how it would affect the surrounding environment. It is estimated to cost around $16 million, but the process would take two years before any dredging occurs.

Obviously, improving Fort Lauderdale’s canals would have huge economical benefits for the city, bringing in more business and creating more jobs. Yacht Racers Deterred by Skipper’s Injury

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

On the final leg of a yachting race to San Francisco, California from Qingdao, China, skipper Piers Dudin of second place vessel The Hull & Humber was injured, causing The Hull & Humber to break from the race. Dudin’s vessel was 400 miles east of Japan, nearing the final stretch of a 35,000 mile circumnavigational race when the incident occurred.

This journey began in September 2009 from the Humber estuary, and was nearing its close when the skipper broke the shin of his right leg during rough seas.  He was swept into the guard rail where the side of his leg was caught, and it is believed the force of the water broke his bone.

After the incident, Piers informed his crew of the injury, and they helped him down below.  He gave calm instructions on the steps to follow to take care of the situation.  A spokesperson for the race organizers stated that “the crew reacted quickly and after seeking medical advice through Falmouth Coastguard, they applied a leg splint to the injury and administered painkillers.”

In the meantime, the skipper of a fellow racing yacht, the Spirit of Australia, will take over skipper Piers’ position.

The Hull and Humber is en route to Japan to rendezvous with a larger boat with a helicopter on board to airlift Piers to Sendai, a city just north of Tokyo.

On Friday a Japanese coastguard vessel brought a doctor to the yacht, and Mr. Dudin was transferred to the coast guard vessel to meet with the vessel carrying the helicopter.

Yacht Show in Dubai Featured Hundreds of Yachts and Superyachts

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

This week, Dubai is hosting the International Boat Show, and it kicked off with a great start.  Merchants were selling everything from shark repellent to boat houses and police boats.

More than 400 small vessels and over 25 superyachts are on display at the Dubai International Marine club.  The Silver Zwei, a superyacht, traveled from Australa in just eleven days. One of the major attractions of the week’s events, this vessel reaches a top speed of 27 knots and is 73m long.

This particular show is a favorite for local yacht sellers, although it closely follows the Abu Dhabi Yacht Show which, despite many visitors, had very few sales.

A major draw to the show besides the superyachts were the pleasure yachts and fishing boats, which are more affordable selections of vessels on display at the show.

By the time the show hits its end on Sunday, it is expected that nearly 100,000 visitors will attend the show.

For those in the southeast of the United States, Atlantic Yacht and Ship will be attending the Palm Beach International Boat Show at the end of March, with many yachts and vessels on display.

Energy Efficient Super Yacht Debuts in Germany for World Tour

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Greener and more energy-efficient trends are popping up in designs in the superyacht world, and new, earth-friendly prototypes are surfacing.

Alastair Callender’s Soliloquy features a vessel inspired by Masdar City’s zero emissions, and comes with an adjustable superstructure to provide it with rigid sails.

Another “green” vessel cunstructed in northern Germany at Kiel’s Knierim Yacht Club is PlanetSolar. A 30m by 15m catamaran yacht, this vessel features a sleek design that allows it to carve through water smoothly and thus increases its speed and decreases stress on its solar powering.  Its design brings the 60 ton yacht to 15 knots.

PlanetSolar is a concept of Raphael Domjan, a Swiss designer.  Construction costs are nearly $24 million and the vessel was unveiled recently in Germany and will be circumnavigating the world beginning in spring of 2011 to break records and change goals for a more green approach to nautical designs.

Domjan is planning to embark on the round-the-world journey along with Gerard d’Aboville, a French Mariner who will control PlanetSolar.  The yacht features 500 square meters of solar panels.
