Avoid Trouble and Prepare for Yacht Inspections in the Mediterranean

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

If you are planning a trip around the Mediterranean this summer, beware of how the new Paris Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) impacts yachts.  Put into effect January 1, 2011, the Paris MoU is an agreement among 27 countries to share inspection responsibilities of ships entering their region.  Though yachts have always maintained a low profile with port authorities around the world, the Paris MoU applies to all travelers, including commercial and private vessels.

The mission of the Paris MoU is “to eliminate the operation of sub-standard ships through a harmonized system of port State control,” reports parismou.org.  They do this by ensuring that foreign ships meet international safety, security and environmental standards in accordance with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations.

Another reason behind the recent agreement is to activate THETIS, The Hybrid European Targeting and Inspection System, an electronic database of all entering ships.

Yachts that do not possess an inspection history are at a greater risk, flagged by the Paris MoU has “unknown ships”.  For these yachts, they may expect a “Priority 1” handling, requiring a detailed inspection within 15 days of entry.

If yachts do not comply, the Paris MoU will detain vessels, leading to charter disruptions, cancellations and unplanned expenses.  To avoid trouble on your Mediterranean summer vacation, make sure your yacht is compliant with Paris MoU standards.  Take precautions to organize all vessel documents, previous inspections, logbooks and maintenance information.

Stuart Biesel for The Triton said if you follow the procedures, checklists and exercises required by Flag State, classification society, SOLAS, safety management systems and particularly MARPOL, you will have little to worry about.

If you are looking for a yacht charter for your summer vacation around the Med, Atlantic Yacht and Ship is a yacht brokerage in Fort Lauderdale that will help you with all of the details.  Or if you’re looking for yachts for sale, Atlantic Yacht and Ship has hundreds of brands to suit your personal tastes.  With summer around the corner, start planning your travels today.  Chart your course and find your perfect match by searching our yacht listings now.

Destination: Grenada, The Spice of the Caribbean!

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Winter Solstice is coming up and if you’re looking for a warmer place to escape for the holidays, the Caribbean islands could be just the perfect location! Whether you wish to charter a yacht or take your own boat out, the Caribbean islands welcome you with a warm, tropical escape. This week, we highlight the south Caribbean islands of Grenada and the neighboring Grenadines. The new Port Louis Marina near St. George, the capital of Grenada, is a huge draw for superyachts. With 160 slips for yachts up to 300 feet, the marina is located below the hurricane belt and offers a safe and welcome place for yachts.

The island of Grenada has an international airport just ten minutes from the capital. The island is English speaking, with no traffic jams and little crime. All the hotels on Grenada were developed not to exceed the height of the palm trees in order to preserve the natural look of the island and to offer unobstructed views of the scenery. There are plenty of natural wonders to explore including spectacular waterfalls, rainforests, rivers, wreck diving and pristine Caribbean beaches.

Grenada is nicknamed the Spice of the Caribbean for its soil and climate that’s perfect for growing spices, making the country one of the world’s largest producers of nutmeg and mace. Herbs and spices make their way into the local cuisine, which consists of spiced meats and fish with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables.
