Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Once a year, Cannes in the French Riviera becomes the entertainment center of the world. Supporters of the movie industry congregate to view films, give awards and recognize achievement. It is also the tradition to arrive by yacht, as some of the world’s largest and most luxurious superyachts dock along the Jetee Edouard Albert.

The highly anticipated Cannes International Film Festival opens May 12th.The twelve day event will feature star power, glitz, glamour and yachts sailing up to the red carpet in the beautiful southern port city of France. To make things more interesting, the chosen director to head the independent film festival is none other than Tim Burton – the perfect choice with his touch of wonderful fantasy and imagination. His presence alone will surely attract artists, journalists and film buffs around the world.

Many entertainment companies will charter yachts of all sizes for entertainment during the festival. Boats anchor or cruise along the Riviera for private events, meetings, lunch cocktails or formal dinners. Yachts are even chartered for accommodation as an alternative to staying at packed hotels during the busy festival week. A-list movie stars have anchored in Port Canto or Old Port for the night, near some of the world’s most exclusive nightclubs. Companies will hold elegant dinner parties onboard yachts, complete with catering, DJs and live entertainment.

Florida Legislature Voting on Measure that Sets Tax Cap on Boats at $18,000

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

The House Finance and Tax Council have moved forward with a measure that caps sales tax on boats sold in Florida at $18,000. The tax cap is part of a measure that plans to spend $89 million on tax incentives this year.

Under the proposal, all boat purchases are subject to Florida’s standard 6% sales tax, but once the tax amount hits $18,000, (the equivalent of a $300,000 boat) the rest of the boat’s cost is tax free. If the measure is approved by both houses of the state legislature and Governor Charlie Crist, the tax cap will go into effect July 1, 2010.

Whether you call it a tax incentive or a revenue generator, this measure gives boat buyers a huge reason to buy in Florida. The measure will absolutely help Florida-based yacht brokers, bringing in business from buyers who formerly went to states with lower sales tax like Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina or Alabama. Others even create offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands or Marshall Islands to dodge the Florida 6% sales tax.

The new initiatives are designed to help the Florida yacht industry bring in at least a quarter of the business in competing areas.

The marine industry employs over 220,000 people in Florida, with a majority of them in South Florida. The tax cap’s goal is to keep revenue in Florida to help local yacht brokers such as Atlantic Yacht and Ship, which has served the yacht community for 50 years. The yacht brokerage in Fort Lauderdale – the heart of the yachting capital of the world – offers new and used boats for sale.

Yacht Show in Dubai Featured Hundreds of Yachts and Superyachts

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

This week, Dubai is hosting the International Boat Show, and it kicked off with a great start.  Merchants were selling everything from shark repellent to boat houses and police boats.

More than 400 small vessels and over 25 superyachts are on display at the Dubai International Marine club.  The Silver Zwei, a superyacht, traveled from Australa in just eleven days. One of the major attractions of the week’s events, this vessel reaches a top speed of 27 knots and is 73m long.

This particular show is a favorite for local yacht sellers, although it closely follows the Abu Dhabi Yacht Show which, despite many visitors, had very few sales.

A major draw to the show besides the superyachts were the pleasure yachts and fishing boats, which are more affordable selections of vessels on display at the show.

By the time the show hits its end on Sunday, it is expected that nearly 100,000 visitors will attend the show.

For those in the southeast of the United States, Atlantic Yacht and Ship will be attending the Palm Beach International Boat Show at the end of March, with many yachts and vessels on display.

Atlantic Yacht & Ship, a south Floridian company of yacht brokers, is located just minutes from the Fort Lauderdale / Hollywood International Airport, in the heart of the “Venice of America” and yachting capital of the world of Fort Lauderdale.

Energy Efficient Super Yacht Debuts in Germany for World Tour

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Greener and more energy-efficient trends are popping up in designs in the superyacht world, and new, earth-friendly prototypes are surfacing.

Alastair Callender’s Soliloquy features a vessel inspired by Masdar City’s zero emissions, and comes with an adjustable superstructure to provide it with rigid sails.

Another “green” vessel cunstructed in northern Germany at Kiel’s Knierim Yacht Club is PlanetSolar. A 30m by 15m catamaran yacht, this vessel features a sleek design that allows it to carve through water smoothly and thus increases its speed and decreases stress on its solar powering.  Its design brings the 60 ton yacht to 15 knots.

PlanetSolar is a concept of Raphael Domjan, a Swiss designer.  Construction costs are nearly $24 million and the vessel was unveiled recently in Germany and will be circumnavigating the world beginning in spring of 2011 to break records and change goals for a more green approach to nautical designs.

Domjan is planning to embark on the round-the-world journey along with Gerard d’Aboville, a French Mariner who will control PlanetSolar.  The yacht features 500 square meters of solar panels.
