America’s Cup Yacht Race off to a Delayed Start

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

The America’s Cup Yacht races are off to a delayed beginning from Valencia, Spain, due to rough seas and poor weather conditions. This competition is part of a best-of-three series with competitors on Swiss and American yachts

Weather postponements have been made twice, and Alinghi 5, the defending champion, will be challenged by USA-17 starting on Friday, weather permitting.

On Wednesday, the waves were higher than three feet, high enough for the director of the race to call for a postponement.  Regardless of the rough waters and weather, crew members were eager to begin the race, and spectators were momentarily excited a few hours after the scheduled start time when the Alinghi5 moved from its dock… however, to the crowd’s disappointment, the vessel was simply turning around.

These vessels have faced far rougher seas elsewhere, and were built to tough such high waves out, but race officials called to hold off beginning the races until conditions improved.

The Alinghi’s meteorologist, Jack Katzfey, was not shocked at the start’s delay, as he had predicted Tuesday that consistent windforces from the northwest would build waves up to be a few feet high, creating rough seas for a few days.

Working for Alinghi’s team since 2003, Katzfey provides short-term weather forecasts to the crewmembers, allowing them to direct their racing strategies accordingly. Katzfey travels with nine weather boats, and during the race they are scattered along the course.  Each of the nine vessels has a 20-foot mast, and atop the masts are a number of instruments to measure wind direction and speed.

Sixteen Year Old Abby Sunderland Embarks on Solo Yacht Journey Around the World

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Early Saturday morning, 16-year old Abby Sunderland of Thousand Oaks left Marina del Rey on her custom-equipped yacht and embared into the Pacific ocean, beginning a controversial adventure in hopes of becoming the youngest sailor to circumnavigate the globe solo.

Family, friends and neighbors crowded the Del Rey Yacht Club to wish her well on her journey aboard Wild Eyes, her 40-foot vessel.  With a stoic expression, she hugged her father, a boat-builder, goodbye and guided her vessel through the marina’s main channel to begin a nearly 25,000 mile trip.

Before leaving, she hopped off board to  stand on concrete one last time for nearly six months.  Her brother Zac, now 17, is the current record-holder for the same adventure, and she hopes to beat his record.  Though she’s sailing alone, she is able to communicate with her family and with assistance through solar-powered satellite phone and can communicate with fans through abbysunderland.com

While her brother Zac had some stops on land on a 14-month journey, Abby plans no stops and has a fast yachtdesigned for giant swells and strong winds.

Unlike Zac and other past record contenders, Abby plans no stops on land, and she has a faster yachtdesigned for the giant swells and 60-knot winds she’ll face. Her route begins heading south from California, then down and around Central and South America, turning east around Cape Horn beyond South Africa, and then across the Indian Ocean and past Australia before a long run east through the Pacific.

Abby’s nonstop trip gives her new distinction as the youngest solo unassisted sailor, to top Jesse Martin, who successfully made that journey at the age of 18, nearly 11 years ago.

Luxury Yacht Runs Aground in Barrier Reef; Department of Environment Steps In

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

After six weeks of being abandoned on Belize’s barrier reef, the 85-foot luxury yacht belonging to American national Albert Barscroft has been deemed lodged on the reef near Hunting Caye.  Barscroft ran aground on November 30th after exiting Belizean territory waters.

While the Port Authorty is investigating the cause of the accident, evidence already suggests the incident occurred as a result of Barscroft’s negligence.

Because it has been abandoned and left in the waters for so long, it is beginning to fall apart.  The tank is full with fuel, and therefore environmentalists have deemed the vessel to be a potential environmental danger.  The Department of Environment is concerned the yacht is beginning to break apart.

According to the Department of Environment, Albert Barscroft claims to have paid someone $10,000 to remove the yacht, but the man wanted an additional $60,000 to remove it.  Because of this outstanding issue, it is up to the Department of Environment to step in and remove the vessel to prevent enviromental damage to the reef.

Currently the Department of Environment is gathering funds and organizing the project, which will cost between $30,000 and $50,000 to have a ship pull it out of the reef. Barscroft will be responsible to the debt owed to the Department.

However, upon being detained by the Coast Guard after the yacht crashed into the barrier, Barscroft suffered a heart attack and was rushed to a hospital in Guatemala.  The exact damage done to the reef is unknown until the vessel is removed.

Missing Yacht Sailor Continues Circumnavigation Journey

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

52-year old Paddy Macklin left Falmouth, Cornwall in mid-December with a goal to sail the globe the old fashioned way.  Choosing to set sail sans any corporate support or high-tech gadgets, Macklin funded the trip himself, packing 600 days’ worth of food and beverages.

He stayed in touch with family daily by using a satellite telephone.  But just a couple weeks into the journey aboard The Tessa, his 27 foot yachts, former painter and interior decorator Macklin was not heard from.  Believed by his family to have caught trouble off the west coast of France where violent storms were brewing, Macklin hadn’t contacted his family as normally scheduled, causing concern.

His worried family contacted the coast guard and a search operation was launched to find him.  Spanish and French coastguards failed to make contact with him.  An aircraft from Spain set out to search the last-known position of Macklin’s yacht, but came up empty-handed.  The search was launched after Macklin radioed coastguards saying he was facing dangerous weather conditions 200 miles from the coast.

Meanwhile, Macklin had packed away his satellite phone to keep it from getting wet during the poor weather conditions in the Bay of Biscay. A former painter and decorator, Macklin even heard reports over the radio that he had gone missing.  However, to protect his phone, he didn’t make any calls until late on Friday.  The British Coast Guard search operation could have been avoided had Macklin purchased a simple location-finding device.  Regardless, the optimistic Macklin stated his intentions are to “recapture the spirit of true amateurism in sailing”.
