Energy Efficient Super Yacht Debuts in Germany for World Tour

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Greener and more energy-efficient trends are popping up in designs in the superyacht world, and new, earth-friendly prototypes are surfacing.

Alastair Callender’s Soliloquy features a vessel inspired by Masdar City’s zero emissions, and comes with an adjustable superstructure to provide it with rigid sails.

Another “green” vessel cunstructed in northern Germany at Kiel’s Knierim Yacht Club is PlanetSolar. A 30m by 15m catamaran yacht, this vessel features a sleek design that allows it to carve through water smoothly and thus increases its speed and decreases stress on its solar powering.  Its design brings the 60 ton yacht to 15 knots.

PlanetSolar is a concept of Raphael Domjan, a Swiss designer.  Construction costs are nearly $24 million and the vessel was unveiled recently in Germany and will be circumnavigating the world beginning in spring of 2011 to break records and change goals for a more green approach to nautical designs.

Domjan is planning to embark on the round-the-world journey along with Gerard d’Aboville, a French Mariner who will control PlanetSolar.  The yacht features 500 square meters of solar panels.

Long Beach Yacht Club Hosts Southern California Yachting Association’s 81st Midwinter Regatta

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Out of over 30 yacht clubs on the West coast, Long Beach Yacht Club hosted the Southern California Yachting Association’s 81st Midwinter Regatta.

A longstanding tradition kicking off the Southern California racing season, the Midwinter Regatta began in 1928 and has since developed into the United States’ largest regatta event, with over 600 vessels and 80 classes registering, including cruisers, Performance Handicap Racing Fleet, dinghies, multihull, canoes and model sailboats.

Both days of the regatta, crews faced steady winds at 15-20 knots, creating choppy seas to challenge the sailors. Participants came from yacht clubs all over– San Diego, the Pacific Coast, Arizona and the Channel Islands.

A few injuries were incurred from the rough seas, including a crewman aboard the White Knight, Zoltan Katinszky’s Farr 40 vessel.  He lost his footing down below while stowing the spinnaker and had a severe head injury.  The White Knight immediately pulled out of the race and he was brought to a local hospital.

The Farr 40 fleet winner was the Dark Star, Jeff Janov’s vessel from the Cal Yacht Club.  This yacht ended Saturday four points ahead of Piranha, David Voss’ boat.  Voss trailed behind Janov the entire day on Sunday and Janov kept the four points for the win.

Aukland Anniversary Day Yacht & Vessel Regatta Celebrates 170 Years

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Over the weekend, the town of Auckland, New Zealand held its 170th Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta fleet, and it kicked off with some difficulties due to strong winds on the water affecting the performance of vessels and their crews. The flagship for this year’s event was the frigate HMNZS Te Mana.

Unlike last year’s regatta, where a beautiful day with crystal clear waters and warm weather gave crews and spectators a perfect day, this year’s weather conditions caused the Mahurangi to Princes Wharf race to be canceled due to safety reasons. Spectator numbers were much lower this year because of the conditions. Two or more crews traveled from Australia across the Tasman in order to compete in this year’s event.

A strong fleet of a variety of around 500 vessels raced in the challenging event.  Vessels included classic yachts, dinghies, tall ships, and racing keelers. Larger vessels like the giant tugboats had no problems with the rough conditions, but smaller vessels suffered.

No reports of injuries were made, however capsizes and failing gears were reported as affects of the weather conditions.

Next year, the organizers hope to attract more vessels from Australia, to create a more balanced competition.

Yacht Sets Sail to all Oceans Following trail of Charles Darwin

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

A yacht is setting sail this weekend on a three-year scientific voyage mapping Charles Darwin’s trail. The Tara will travel into all the world’s oceans to follow climate change and its affect on the basic marine organisms from which the earth’s life evolved. From the arctic to tropical paradise, this 81,000 nautical mile journey will trace and segue from Darwin’s 5 year voyage of the Beagle in the 1930s which inspired his theory of natural selection.

While Darwin’s trip helped him explain evolution and adaptation amongst species, the Tara’s trip is to study the ocean’s ecosystems at the basic level of the world’s food chain. Scientists aboard the quality motor yacht will be observing small marine life, flora and fauna, that produce half of the planet’s oxygen supply and on which all life depends in order to exist. 90 percent of ocean life is comprised of microorganisms which produce oxygen by absorbing the majority of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

This study involves around one hundred scientists who will be aboard or stationed in land laboratories, analyzing data and samples gathered.  Such a large-scale study has not yet been embarked upon.  There is much to be learned about the effects of climate change on marine organisms.  Some thrive in warmer waters, while others will die out, and plenty of organisms are threatened by pollution.

Being at the base of the world’s food chain, affects that cause a species to die or shrink in population affects the entire ecosystem of the planet, despite those affects going seemingly undetected.  Not only do these changes affect the food chain, they also affect the quality of air in the change of levels of oxygen produced.
